Configuring PayPal

This is a straightforward process, and we are here to guide you through it. If you have any problems, please contact us.

Before you start, you need to ensure that you have a PayPal Business account. If you do not then you can upgrade by logging into PayPal and selecting "Upgrade to Business Account" from the options under "Enhance Account" on the left hand menu, then following the process.

To make your Startershop work correctly with PayPal we need you to make some changes to your PayPal settings, these are explained below, step by step. We also need you to send us two pieces of information about your PayPal account (an "Identity Token" and the email address you use to log on to PayPal), this is explained in Stage 2 below.

Stage 1: Instant Payment Notification

These settings allow your PayPal account to inform your Startershop when items have been paid for, and when you have made refunds through your PayPal account. This ensures that everything is kept up to date. Follow these steps:

  1. Log in to PayPal, using your new business account
  2. Go to the “My Account” tab in PayPal
  3. Select the “Profile” link, just below the tabs towards the the top right.
  4. Select “Instant Payment Notification Preferences” (IPN) fifth link down on the right hand column
  5. Select the “Edit” button
  6. Tick the box to activate Instant Payment Notification Preferences
  7. Enter e.g. “http://zingytees.browseorbuy.com/paypal/ipn.php” into the “Notification URL” field.(click the edit button if a text box is not immediately visible) (NB: Instead of entering zingytees. browseorbuy.com here, replace this with your own Startershop web address).
  8. Select the “Save” button

(You should then see the message “You have successfully activated Instant Payment Notification.”)

Stage 2: "Auto Return" & PayPal Identity Token

These settings tell PayPal to return your customers to your Startershop after they’ve paid, they also talk you through sending us the details we need to make your Startershop work correctly with PayPal.

Make sure you are Logged In to your new business PayPal account.

  1. Go to the “My Account” tab in PayPal
  2. Select the “Profile” link, just below the tabs
  3. Select “Website Payment Preferences” (ninth link down in the right hand column)
  4. Make sure that “Auto Return for Website Payments” is set to “On”
  5. Enter e.g. “http://zingytees.browseorbuy.com/paypal/return. php” into the “Return URL” field. (Click the edit button if a text box is not immediately visible) (NB: Instead of entering zingytees. browseorbuy.com here, replace this with your own Startershop address).
  6. Make sure that “Payment Data Transfer” is set to “On”
  7. Save these options
  8. Select “Website Payment Preferences” again (ninth link down in the right hand column)
  9. Just below where you set “Payment Data Transfer” to “On”, there will be a huge string of numbers and letters called the Identity Token. Select and copy (Edit > Copy) this into an email, be sure to get all of it, and send it to support@startershop.com, accompanied by the name of your Startershop and the email address you use to log in to PayPal.

Thanks for your patience; that’s it! You are free to “Log Out” of PayPal using the link towards the top of the page.
